How to disagree politely in English

KeepReap Editorial

Ways to say it

  • I see it differently, because

    NeutralB1

The "because" is not optional. Without it this becomes a statement of position with nothing to discuss.

ExampleI see it differently, because the same change broke the importer last quarter.

  • What am I missing here?

    CasualB1

Genuinely useful when you may be wrong, and it gives the other person a route to explain rather than defend. Do not use it when you are certain; it reads as sarcasm.

ExampleThat would double the query cost as I read it — what am I missing here?

  • I'd want to be sure that

    FormalB2

Raises a condition rather than an objection, which works well upwards. It leaves the decision with them while putting the risk on record.

ExampleI'd want to be sure that support has capacity before we bring the date forward.

When not to use

Do not use the questioning forms when you have already been overruled and the decision is final. Continuing to ask "what am I missing?" after a call has been made reads as relitigating rather than clarifying. At that point say what you will do — and, if you think the risk is real, put it in writing once, plainly, and move on.
